Auckland feels the heat today + stuffy night tonight

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Aucklanders are sweltering under their hottest day since April according to WeatherWatch.co.nz.

While Auckland uses several weather observations across the city, the Whenuapai weather station recorded 24.6 degrees today – which is rounded up to 25 for the media.  (If 24.4 it would be rounded down to 24).

Cloudy skies, which were predicted earlier in the day by WeatherWatch.co.nz, faded earlier in the day allowing for plenty of sun and sea breezes to kick things up a notch.

The sudden jump in heat caught forecasters by surprise.  No forecaster perfectly predicted today’s heat in the city.   WeatherWatch.co.nz originally predicted 23 in the morning, then lifted that to 24 around noon.  MetService predicted 23 in their late morning forecast but upped it to 24 by mid afternoon.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the jump in temperatures signals we are coming to the end of spring and the cold months of winter are now well behind us.

WeatherWatch.co.nz predicts tonight will be a stuffy, warm, night for Auckland with a low of just 16 degrees.  Clouds and extra humidity from a dying low just north of Cape Reinga will help feed the warmer conditions overnight – and for the next few nights.

Hi Dave – thanks for the temp!

These messy systems are the hardest to forecast as they are so slow moving and fickle.  Offically wasn’t as warm as both WW and MS predicted due to cloud cover taking longer to arrive last night.

This Saturday night is looking warmer though.
