Animation: Windy spring weather returns to NZ

> From the WeatherWatch archives

The past week felt like summer in many regions – today is a reminder it is still technically spring as gale force westerlies push in to many regions.

In Auckland gusty nor’westers are reaching gale at times in more exposed areas, especially the harbours and western areas.

In Wellington winds are hovering around gale force and gusting closer to 100km/h.

And in Christchurch westerlies of 30km/h are gusting to 60km/h.

Those are just the three main centres – in between similar winds continue to blow, with gusts over 100km/h in some exposed hilly areas, like the Southern Alps or the ranges around the lower North Island.

Windy weather kicks off the new working week, but by December 1st (this Thursday) we expect high pressure to move in and winds to ease in most regions.
