Afternoon fog affecting Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Hawkes Bay (+Photos/Tweets)

> From the WeatherWatch archives

WeatherWatch.co.nz has had numerous reports this afternoon about fog lingering – or returning – to some parts of the North Island. In particular Waikato and Auckland have had lingering fog all day in some areas – or low cloud. Fog has been hanging over Hamilton City until early afternoon and is still affecting some parts of Auckland.

WeatherWatch.co.nz asked on social media who still had fog this afternoon – we had replies from coastal parts of Northland, inner city parts of Auckland, Hamilton and rural Waikato and down to Napier.

The fog came in overnight and lifted in the morning in many places, but towards lunchtime the right conditions have seen the fog roll back.

As of 4pm fog was still lingering in parts of Waikato and Auckland – and possibly elsewhere (hard for us to track fog outside of the main centres).

Windier weather is moving in tonight and tomorrow so fog should be less likely, but may linger longer in places further east (like Hawkes Bay).

Fog lingering into the afternoon does occur from time to time in New Zealand, mostly in winter. Sometimes the coastal variety can suddenly pop up, at any time of the year.
