Friday sees another storm system move in from the Southern Ocean, while strong winds, rain and a cold southwest change are all in the pipeline as we head into the weekend.

Thursday

Blue: Heavy showers and possible heavy rain on the West Coast of the South Island.

Light Blue: Showers and possible heavy rain in Auckland, Northland and Waikato overnight.

Friday

Blue: Heavy rain on the West Coast.

Green: Heavy spells of rain and stormy conditions for the western North Island, Waikato, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Northland.

Purple: Gale force northwest winds through Cook Strait, and strong winds for the west of the North Island.

Saturday

Purple: Winds from the southwest in the South Island and northwest in the North Island from morning

Light blue: Showers for almost the entire North Island, and most of the South Island at times through the day
