A moving front – The Big Picture on Wednesday

> From the WeatherWatch archives

A second front is set to move over the North Island and upper South Island in the afternoon on Tuesday, bringing rain and showers to many parts of both islands.

In the North Island’s west we have showers, with some becoming heavy with thunderstorms in the afternoon and into evening, along with gusty winds from the northwest.
The East Coast sees sunny areas along with some increasing high cloud, and a few spots of rain moving in during the evening – spreading from the west.
Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay may see a few morning showers clear away too.

The South Island – especially the lower South Island – sits under a weak ridge before the front makes landfall.
For the South Island north of Banks Peninsula, sunny areas dominate in the morning, before showers and spells of rain move in from late afternoon and into the evening.
Morning showers for Canterbury clear, then sun prevails, until those showers move in for parts of North Canterbury later in the evening.
Southland and Otago look mainly sunny, with light winds.
