Another low pressure system is forming in the Tasman Sea, ready to move over the country overnight on Friday and into Saturday morning.

Hot on the heels of the last large low, this one is deeper and faster moving – and some regions will be looking at some decent rainfall numbers in a short burst as a result.

Friday

Blue: Heavy rain across the west of the North Island – mainly south of Taranaki – and top of the South Island late in the day.

Purple: Strong winds over much of the western North Island & upper South Island

A front barrels in from the northwest during the day, but won’t reach New Zealand until late in the evening – and further overnight.

 

Saturday

Blue: Rain for much of the North Island to start, with heavy spells in the west particularly – as well as the upper South Island.

Purple: Strong winds at times in the western North Island and on Banks Peninsula

That large low pressure system stays with the country, as heavy spells of rain and strong winds stick around, especially in the west.
Rain in the upper South Island should ease by afternoon, though winds pick up – especially for the eastern extremities.

 

Sunday

Blue: Rain and showers for much of the North Island

Northwesterlies return for the North Island, while the South Island sees cooler southwesterlies – and late rain moves in for parts of the East Coast.
