As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Thanks for your support!

Don’t forget to check out our RuralWeather.co.nz website (great for event planning or attending + camping!) and also, our brand new Weather Alerting App!

i see in the tasmin there are quite a fair amount of lightning activity. normally in wersterly set ups like this this can happen. i wonder if there might be a tornado somewhere in western nz this week? normally in these set up we do. not much tornadoes this year in nz

Kat on 29/08/2024 9:42am

WOW, a real Waikato thunder booming night. Thinking of you, Josh. You’d be loving this.!!! 🤙🙂

Josh on 19/08/2024 8:41pm

hey ww finally had some thunder and lightning in papakura ,south auckland yesterday with some squalls. but no hail. good forecasting as always.

josh on 19/08/2024 9:02pm

also reports on social media of a small tornado in hamilton. it could of been a squall? although there are pictures of a possible funnel like apperance.

Kat on 20/08/2024 7:02pm

Hello Josh
Sorry mate, no tornado for us. Yes, there were some gnarly looking cloud formations then got the squally sideways rain, thunder, a bit of lightning and hail, but no funnel clouds. Weather was bad enough for me to want a basement, my flatties to stand at the window with phones iready and my cat on my shoulders, but all survived. LOL Yay the Mighty Tron.

How’d you do up in AKL?

Josh on 25/08/2024 8:38pm

yeah given nothing was reported in the news media. i think it was a squall. in papakura where i live one of my sheds roof got blown off by a squall. some lightning/thunder too.

Briar Pacey on 8/08/2024 10:41pm

Kia ora Weather Watch team,
we have a snow dependent shoot out of Queenstown around 10th September. Any low altitude snow storms forecast to come past before? Know everyone on the ski fields are wondering too!
thanks for all your awesome work! briar
