As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
Weβre a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather.Β You can find more resources from us here if thatβs your thing.

The rainfall that showed up in the
graph in the app said for te Atatu South , today
afternoon, βtraceβ and 9,7,10%
chance per hour, though it rained with heavy
bursts to start, then it rained all afternoon
and were fairly widespread throughout West Auckland. And our rain gauge recorded 1.6 -2mm in approximately an hour after 1:30pm. How come these showers were missed in the forecast? This is not the only occasion but I have noticed that these kinds of showers were missed many times during the forecast and the map also shows very less chance or ends up in telling βpartly cloudyβ or mostly cloudyβ,
ignoring the showers.

Hi there β NZ doesnβt provide open weather data unlike Australia and the rest of the modern world β this dumb downs all NZ forecasts as radar data (tax funded) canβt be openly used by the people that fund it. Itβs a known problem in NZ β and NIWA and MetService are both Government agencies now publicly not getting on so well.
Try using the Trend graphs in the free WW app, or at RuralWeather.co.nz β the rain graphs there match what happened today almost perfectly. Radar data would improve this β but MetService want to make money off us if we use βtheirβ (tax-paid-for) data. Itβs a really silly set up in NZ, which is why the Govt is reviewing it for the third time in as many years.

hey phil. good to have some rain again for drought zones. the first major rain maker and the media has to go and call it a atmospheric river. I hope just steady rain for Auckland nothing major.

Hey Josh, sadly mainstream media and Niwa are often hyping weather news and being more dramatic. Hereβs hoping the MetService merger with Niwa forces normality back to the Governmentβs weather media releases and interactions with the MSM. If everything is always the most dramatic sounding then it leaves no words when a major event occurs, something WeatherWatch and MetService both aleady understand.

i just checked your auckland forecast and your forecast says showers. but 20mm expected. shouldnt it say rain? or will the showers be heavy? it seems to say rain when only 1mm is expected. but showers when 20mm?

Hi Josh not sure what day youβre talking about but when that happens it means the rain is likely at night. If you look at the rain graphs at RuralWeather.co.nz or under βTrendsβ in our free app you can see the rain setting in heavier at night and then going into Friday.
