As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
Weโre a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather.ย You can find more resources from us here if thatโs your thing.

Thanks for your support!

Hi Team,
My husband and I love Weather Watch, this is our favourite weather site, we think your forecasts are the most accurate and as we collect rainwater we do a lot of watching! I just have a question about current temperature vs actual temperature, particularly in relation to wind chill, weโve noticed that some other forecasters display both temperatures, do you think this is relevant in forecasting or not essential? Iโm guessing that your displayed temperatures include any adjustments due to wind and other factors? Just curious, thereโs no hurry for an answer and I hope itโs not a silly question! Thank you for the great forecasting and warnings too, weโve needed those in Otago lately!

Hi Nicola, thanks for the kind comment and your questions. If you download our free app, or use RuralWeather.co.nz, click on the Temperature tab under โTrendsโ and you can see both humidex (heat + humidity) and wind chill (temp + wind) alongside the usual forecast temperature. Humidex is especially helpful in summer for humans and livestock management. Windchill is great in winter when it can be windy, cold and damp. These free graphs cover hourly forecasts for all locations in NZ, out for 10 whole days.
Hope you find it helpful!
Kind regards,
Philip Duncan

Hi Team!
I love your reporting and have a question.
Traveling to Queenstown from 6th Nov to 9 Nov โ at this stage how likely do you think it is that the weather is going to be bad?

Hi Jafar, at this stage itโs looking pretty good โ but next Friday may have a surge of strong winds and some rain. Keep an eye on our forecasts for Queenstown (especially the weather โtrendsโ in our free app). Also, our weather videos (especially tomorrow and early next week) will help make sense of what is driving the local forecast there later next week.
Cheers

Hi team,
How long should we keep an eye on the forecast before we can be almost 100% certain how itโll play out? I have a event on Saturday night in Christchurch and this rate itโll be cancelled due to the rain which Iโm really hoping is not the case. Iโm guessing Thurs/Fri would be more of a solidifed forecast?

Hi Josh, our forecasts update hourly โ which on the day itself can be more helpful. International models (which all forecasts around the world are based on) update a couple times a day usually. So those hourly updates this far out may not be as usuful โ but if youโre really wanting to track the confidence of the forecasts check it when you wake up and again in the evening to get a gist of things. So yes, Thu/Fri youโll get a better idea โ then couple that up with our week-day weather videos (which return Wednesday) and that will help you make more sense of what is driving your local weather forecast for Saturday and how certain it may be looking.
At this stage weโre only forecasting a moderate chance of few mm of rain in Christchurch on Saturday PM.
Cheers

Hi team,
Thanks for that. Now that we are closer to the day and youโve got 50% rain predicted with showers from 4pm โ 12pm, right in the area where we donโt want it โ what is your confidence levels on rain occurring saturday PM? Iโve seen the rain predictions go from 1pm till 12am to 2pm till 10pm and now 4pm till 12am so its continuously moving back, is that a good sign it might hold off till the early hours of sunday morning?

Same reply as before Josh. Also check the rain forecast maps we have so you can see the front moving through ahead of time โ and check your local forecast for how much rain is likely.
A cold front is moving through roughly around 6pm with showers/or some patchy rain (+/- a couple hours). Low rainfall. Good luck!

Hope youโve got air con! ๐ Thanks for the update Hailey โ some private weather stations do sometimes break (we display many thousands across NZ). In our app you can select other observations near to you that are working. However if that one still remains broken in a week or two please let us know. Most are fixed fairly soon but we can permanently remove ones that have broken for weeks.
Please note the current incorrect displayed temperature is completely unrelated to our weather forecasts for Snells Beach.
Kind regards
