Winds lash central NZ

Northwest winds were exceeding 100kph in a few central regions overnight.
Wellington had a northerly averaging 80kph at one stage and gusting 110kph. Nearby Mt Kaukau was being hammered by northerlies approaching the 150kph mark.

Across the strait, Nelson and Blenheim also had a big blow with winds nudging 100kph from the nor’ west direction.

Castlepoint registered similar speeds and we’re anticipating the winds to ease later in the day.
Canterbury too recorded some big gusts but conditions are expected to improve there later this morning.

Overnight temperatures have been near the 17-20 degree mark in a few centres, as the wind helped keep the mercury afloat. Colder conditions are expected to be felt, starting tomorrow in the south, as a southerly change should see temperatures take a dive.
