For the many people that live near our biggest airports from time to time a passenger jet can be seen cutting through the clouds – quite literally.
These photos, captured the other day by our very own Philip Duncan, clearly shows the line left behind after a departing international flight flew over Auckland city.
“The photos certainly don’t do it justice but it looked so strange to see this clear line cut through the cloud, with a a short vapour trail attached” Phil told us.

Hi Nicola, just like a cloud of smoke the wind can blow a weather cloud into different shapes. When the jets engines go through it it basically mows a path through it – the engines eat up the cloud and the plane itself helps split it open. For this to be noticeable the cloud needs to be very thin – and that’s what we had the other day. Thicker clouds and you wouldn’t be able to see it.
Cheers
Phil
