High pressure still lies north of NZ today as a cold front moves up the South Island’s western side.
Let’s get into the forecast for Friday to begin with…
RAIN:
Rain and showers continue right along the West Coast and parts of Southland and Otago. A few isolated showers for the western North Island otherwise the rest of NZ is dry.
WIND:
Westerlies blow through for most, with sub-tropical connections for the top of the country.
TEMPERATURES:
It’s mild in the North Island, especially in the east and north of the South Island. But cooler air behind that cold front spreads up West Coast and also through Southland and Otago with daytime highs only just breaking the teen mark for some.
THE WEEKEND & NEXT WEEKEND
By Saturday that western rain band moves into the North Island’s west and north and mainly falls apart to just showers with a cooler sou-west flow spreading up the South Island behind it, windy in some places. This flow brings colder and wetter weather into Southland, the West Coast and even Otago.
On Sunday high pressure briefly rolls in with more settled weather over NZ and just a few isolated showers, maybe around the eastern North Island – but won’t be much.
Monday next week looks to kick off with another enormous Southern Ocean storm (well south of NZ) – but big enough to help bring another spring-surge of severe gales to the lower portion of the South Island – while it remains calm in northern parts of the country thanks to that high pressure zone which is still lingering.
On Tuesday next week westerlies return further across the country and rain and showers for the West Coast.
Wednesday and Thursday should see high pressure growing again – before the next surge of westerlies by Friday next week.
