Sunday sees high pressure moving in from Australia and will quickly calm things down across much of New Zealand – plus it ushers in hotter air again from the Australia interior. Those windy nor’westers kick back in again to the deep south and Fiordland area on Sunday but elsewhere high pressure means winds ease for many (not all), skies clear, remaining wet weather moves on. It may still be a little windy in parts of the North Island but gales aren’t expected over land for most.
Temperatures jump back up in most places on Sunday.
However those windy nor’westers do return through some parts of the South Island (around the Southern Alps) and up to Cook Strait later.
Wellington has winds blustery winds at times for a number of days ahead. Southland again also looks unsettled this coming week (sorry!).
Monday looks similar – warmer/hotter in most parts of the country, and lighter winds for most of the North Island as high pressure expands. That hot airflow from the NSW and QLD interior continues to feed in across the lower South Island. It will slide further up NZ as the working week progresses with hot, blue sky, weather for the east in particular.
Why is New Zealand so windy? It’s our location on earth.
