A west to northwesterly airflow lies over the North Island building later today with a front pushing through overnight. The South Island has a low sitting out to the east for much of the day, the airflow is mostly from the west although a southerly change sneaks up the east coast during the day. Overnight a more broad scale airflow shift to the south develops.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells, there may be the odd shower throughout the day. Overnight some rain moves through with brief heavy falls possible. Westerlies tend northwest later in the day.
Highs: 18-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Showers, possibly heavy especially in the evening. Brisk to strong west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-17

Eastern North Island

Morning high cloud clears to mostly sunny weather, winds brisk / strong from the northwest during the day. There may be a spot of rain overnight.
Highs: 22-24

Wellington

Areas of cloud and the odd shower, a chance of sunny spells at times too. Strong to gale northwesterly winds.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny about Marlborough with a touch of high cloud at times, winds gusty from the northwest strong with gusts to gale in the afternoon. Nelson sees some cloud and the odd shower spreads from the west at times, breezy northwesterlies.
Highs: 18-21

Canterbury

Sunny areas and some high cloud, northwesterlies change southwest in the afternoon bringing the odd shower then rain moves in overnight
Highs: 18-20

West Coast
Showers, some may be heavy at times with some thunder. Breezy westerlies.

High: 14

Southland & Otago

Areas of rain, heavy at times. Light winds change southerly later in the evening or overnight.
Highs: 13-16
