A front moves northwards over the South Island today bringing heavy rain to the West Coast, strong northwesterly winds preced the front in the east. Over the North Island expect west to northwest winds, building about the lower North Island. About Northland and then Auckland a frontal system moves over these regions afternoon / evening, extending out from what will be a weak TC Ola or perhaps an ex TC which lies to the northwest of the North Island.

Northland
A few sunny areas possible in the morning then becoming cloudy around
midday, light winds. Around midday some rain moves into the far north then
elsewhere late afternoon.

Auckland

A few sunny areas possible this morning otherwise expect thickening high
cloud and northwesterly winds, a few spots of rain moves in late afternoon then
overnight rain becoming a little more persistent.
Highs: 27-28

Bay Of Plenty

Sunny areas and some cloud with northwesterly winds, cloud thickens in the
evening. Some rain moves in overnight.
High: 27

Waikato & Central North Island

Sunny areas and some cloud with westerly breezes, cloud thickens in the
evening with the chance of a late / overnight shower mainly in the west. Towards
dawn on Thursday there may be some rain.
Highs: 22-25

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with gentle northwesterly breezes, some high cloud gradually
increases. About Wairarapa especially in the south northwesterlies become gusty
in the afternoon.
Highs: 27-30

Western North Island

Cloud and west to northwesterly winds build during the morning, brisk from
midday. Later in the evening a few showers move in.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington

Sunny areas, cloud increases from afternoon with northwest winds becoming
strong, a risk of gales. A few showers possible in the evening.
High: 21

Nelson

Sunny areas with northwesterlies, northwest winds strengthen from around
midday with areas of cloud increasing also. In the evening a few showers pass
through for a time.
High: 23

Marlborough

Mostly sunny with strengthening northwesterly winds, a possibility of gales
at times from midday. A few spots of rain possible in the evening.
High: 26

Canterbury

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, northwesterly winds strengthen
becoming strong by midday especially inland. Mid Canterbury and especially North
Canterbury may see gale force northwest winds by late morning and into the
afternoon. Early afternoon a southwest change moves into South Canterbury
reaching North Canterbury late afternoon, mostly this will bring some cloud and
the risk of a shower or two.

West Coast

Cloudy with rain about Fiordland from morning with heavy falls, the odd
shower further north. Rain moves into North Westland by midday with heavy falls
at times. Gusty northwesterly winds with heavy rain then easing to showers
around midday as winds change southwest about South Westland, easing to showers
about North Westland in the evening.
High: 18

Coastal Otago

High cloud at first with northwesterly winds, a strong westerly change mid
morning brings a period of rain which then clears. Sunny areas develop in the
afternoon but westerly winds remaining strong and gusty.
Highs: 15-16

Central Otago

Morning rain (heavy in the west) easing to showers by late morning, hail
possible at times midday onwards. Gusty west to southwesterly winds develop
early on then ease in the evening.
High: 13

Southland

Strong westerly winds with a risk of gales, showers occasionally heavy with
hail and possible thunderstorms.
High: 13
