A cold unstable southwesterly airflow lies over the country today with showers for many regions, some may contain thunderstorms and hail.

Northland
Sunny spells in the morning with breezy westerlies, a few showers from afternoon with strong west to southwest winds.
High: 17

Auckland

Showers, especially midday onwards with strong westerlies. Late hail possible too.
High: 16

Bay Of Plenty

Morning sunny spells, afternoon showers possibly heavy with thunderstorms
and hail. Brisk westerlies.
High: 17

Waikato & Central North Island

Sunny spells and the odd shower possible at first with breezy westerlies.
Showers more likely in the afternoon, heavy with thunderstorms and hail then
easing in the evening.
Highs: 13-15

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and some high cloud with gusty northwesterly winds, a period of
showers move through late afternoon / evening then clear.
Highs: 18-19

Taranaki

Showers, heavy at times with thunderstorms and hail then easing in the
evening as strong westerlies change southwest.
High: 14

Western North Island

Breezy westerlies with the odd shower, showers becoming heavy in the
afternoon with thunderstorms and hail then easing later in the evening.
High: 13

Wellington

Periods of cloud with brisk west to northwest winds, showers develop in the
afternoon possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail as winds tend southerly.
Showers then clear later in the evening.
High: 14

Nelson

Sunny areas and increasing cloud with westerly winds, showers develop late
afternoon especially inland about the ranges to the east. Showers could possibly
be heavy with thunderstorms and hail then clearing by midnight.
High: 16

Marlborough

Sunny areas and some cloud with breezy westerlies, showers develop late
afternoon possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail then clearing by midnight.
Winds tend southerly late afternoon.
Highs: 16-17

Canterbury

Any early showers clear then expect sunny spells with light winds. Showers
again from afternoon as southwesterlies freshen, possibly heavy with hail,
thunderstorms possible from afternoon too mainly in North Canterbury.
Highs: 14-15

West Coast

Showers with a risk of small hail, easing during the afternoon and
gradually clearing. Sunny spells gradually increase with light winds tending
southwest PM.
Highs: 13-14

Coastal Otago

Sunny areas and increasing cloud with freshening southwesterly winds.
Showers from afternoon, possibly heavy with hail at times.
Highs: 12-13

Central Otago

Sunny areas at first in the morning with westerly winds, a few showers from
late morning as winds tend cold southerly. Showers may have small hail at times.
A few light snow flurries to 700m.
Highs: 10-11

Southland

Showers, heavy at times with hail then easing in the evening. Snow flurries
to 600m. Gusty cold southwesterlies.
High: 10
