A strong northwesterly airflow precedes a front moving north of the South Island today, reaching upper parts of the North Island around midnight. Expect rain or showers for many parts of the country today especially in the west.

Periods of cloud with breezy southwesterlies. Odd shower, mainly afternoon. Winds in the morning more westerly, in the afternoon more southwesterly.

Periods of cloud with breezy southwesterlies. Odd shower, mainly
afternoon.

Bay Of Plenty

Sunny areas, a few afternoon showers as breezy westerlies tend
southwest.

Waikato & Central North Island

Cloud builds in the morning with westerly winds, a fresh southwest change
mid to late morning brings a few brief showers which clear around midday. Cloud
breaks in the afternoon with southwesterlies gradually easing, clear skies by
evening.

Eastern North Island

Northwesterlies freshen early in the morning with high cloud, a fresh
southwest change late morning brings some cloud and the chance of a shower then
clearing. Cloud breaks late afternoon with southwesterlies easing.

Taranaki

Southwesterlies freshen in the morning bringing a few showers which clear
around midday, sunny spells increase in the afternoon. Cloud increases again
overnight with winds tending northwest.

Western North Island

A fresh southwest change in the morning brings cloudy areas and a few
showers then clearing by midday, sunny spells increase PM with winds easing.
Northwesterlies freshen again by evening.

Wellington

Winds change fresh southerly early in the morning bringing cloudy periods
and a few showers, sunny spells increase in the afternoon with winds dying out.
Northwesterlies freshen from evening.

Nelson

Any early cloud and the odd shower clears to a mostly sunny day,
southwesterly winds.

Marlborough

Southwesterlies freshen this morning with some cloud and the chance of a
shower then becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon with winds easing.
Northwesterlies freshen in the evening.

Canterbury

Rain eases to showers this morning then clears, mostly sunny after that
with southwesterlies dying out. Some high cloud from afternoon with
northwesterlies building inland, light winds near the coast.

West Coast

Early showers clear with sunny spells developing, southwesterlies ease.
Cloud increases in the afternoon with winds tending northwest, rain from
evening.
Highs: 11-12

Coastal Otago

Becoming mostly sunny early in the morning, breezy westerlies ease. High
cloud thickens from afternoon, chance spot of rain in the evening.

Central Otago

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, a few showers at times from
afternoon mainly about the Southern Lakes area and west of there. Northwesterly
winds.

Southland

Brisk northwesterly winds, a few showers from midday then clearing in the
evening. Mostly cloudy skies all day long.
