The week kicked off in a wet and blustery way, but as it continues, the sting will be taken out of the strong westerly quarter system that is causing the current conditions.

By Thursday, the winds should ease, and we head into the weekend a little calmer and clearer.

Wednesday

Strong southwesterly winds for much of the North Island easing a little from afternoon.
Strong southwesterlies spread over the South Island during the evening & overnight.
Rain for the West Coast of the South Island and Southland may be briefly heavy for a time in the evening before easing.
Chance of a thunderstorm late afternoon / evening about Southland with some hail.
Some snow lowering to 300m for Southland and Otago in the evening then easing overnight.

Thursday

Strong southwesterly winds ease over the country during the day, especially along the east coast.
