High pressure is bringing a ‘cocoon of calm’ to much of the country today and tomorrow but that high slips east this weekend allowing a warmer, more humid, north to north-easterly flow to kick in. This will bring more cloud and showers to eastern parts of the upper North Island this weekend with perhaps some heavy falls in the north-east going into Monday.
By Tuesday a low from the Tasman Sea moves in and brings a burst of rain and/or showers from the west.
By mid-next week a westerly flow returns. We talk about which regions are now in drought and how much rain is coming for them.

Nice explanation as to our current weather situation, re possible drought this summer. Will Auckland’s Hunua and Waitakere Dams get a reprieve? At the moment the focus is on pies in schools maybe we should be worried about water in catchment in critical areas of New Zealand also.

What about the south island east coast up into the Marlborough sounds?

Hi Glen, it’s considered “Dry” but that’s technically 3 steps behind “Drought’. We have the NZ Drought Index map in our Friday afternoon video so you can see how the country currently is.
