Heavy rain around coastal Otago and eastern Southland will ease by Saturday with drier weather this weekend – but rain and showers return to the western half of the North Island and north-west South Island this weekend as the large low over the Tasman Sea falls apart – this encourages windier weather from the west to return.

These westerlies may ramp up even more one week from now.
