Typhoon Saola’s worst now peaking in Hong Kong, several hours to go + 2 other tropical storms for eastern Asia

> From the WeatherWatch archives

Updated 2:10am Saturday NZST — Hong Kong is experiencing Typhoon Saola’s most ferocious winds, rain and storm surge as the centre of the powerful storm tracks nearby just to the south. Macau may be directly hit by the centre of the storm overnight as it tracks moderately along (16km/h) westwards, then tilts more south-westwards.

Damaging winds and flooding rains are moving across the region and widespread, likely historic, damaging weather is expected in Hong Kong this morning and across the earliest half of Saturday morning.

Coastal storm surge of up to 6 metres may be the highest on record for parts of Hong Kong and many nearby islands and authorities on Friday night issued a rare “T9 Warning” for storm that was a Super Typhoon only a day ago.
