Tuesday’s national forecast – Heavy rain western North Island

A few fronts lies over New Zealand today with rain or showers in the west and south, heavy falls for the western North Island. Drier out east but some scattered rain does spread eastwards in the afternoon for the eastern North Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy spells with the odd shower although Northland may stay fairly dry with sunny areas more likely, rain later in the evening or overnight for most moving in from the Tasman Sea. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A few showers, rain moves in during the afternoon becoming heavy, especially about Taranaki, easing overnight as northerlies change westerly.
Highs: 16-20

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and thickening high cloud, late afternoon or evening scattered rain spreads from the west. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 21-24

Wellington

Mostly cloudy, a few showers, mainly in the north, perhaps a little more widespread for a time in the evening. Gusty north to northwesterly winds, strong Cook Strait.
Highs: 18-19

Marlborough & Nelson

High cloud and some sun, a few showers about the Sounds later in the day. North to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-20

Canterbury

Mostly sunny with developing high cloud, spots of rain may spread into the Mackenzie Country from afternoon. Evening spots of rain elsewhere mainly south of Banks Peninsula. Northerlies, perhaps tending to the south Banks Peninsula southwards.
Highs: 15-19

West Coast

Rain about Fiordland gradually spreads northwards during the afternoon, rain may be heavy in the south but eases the further north it travels. Northerly quarter winds change to the southwest later in the day.
Highs: 15-18

Southland & Otago
Morning scattered rain easing to a few spits and increasing sun from afternoon for Southland. Otago has a mix of sun and cloud, some rain about the Lakes District, in the evening a few spots of rain for most. Northwesterly winds, southerlies about coastal Otago for a time.
Highs: 14-17
