A front moves off the top of the South Island this morning then pushes over the North Island for the rest of today. Meanwhile the rest of the South Island has a northwesterly airflow, unstable conditions may develop in the southeast this afternoon.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Areas of rain, heavy at times about southern Auckland / Waikato and Bay Of Plenty then easing in the evening or overnight. Breezy north to northwesterly winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, easing to showers during the afternoon. Rain may not ease about the Central North Island till evening. Strong northwesterly winds gusting to gale at times about the coast then easing in the evening.

Eastern North Island
Thick high cloud, some rain spreading from the west at times. Strong northwesterly winds ease in the evening.
Morning heavy rain with possible thunderstorms then easing to showers around midday, strong to gale northwesterly winds.

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms then clearing to sunny spells in the afternoon, there may be a shower or two continue till evening for some. Strong north to northwesterly winds ease overnight.
Mainly sunny with northwesterly winds, late afternoon showers move into South Canterbury perhaps even parts of Mid Canterbury some of which may be heavy with thunderstorms then clearing in the evening.
Showers, some may be heavy with thunderstorms then easing by evening. North to northwesterly winds.

Southland & Otago
Morning sunny spells then afternoon showers, some may be heavy with thunderstorms before easing in the evening. Light winds tend east to southeast about coastal areas in the afternoon.
