A low moves over central New Zealand today pushing in from the west allowing in a very cold southwest flow from afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Showers or rain (rain more about western Waikato), easing by midday as breezy northwesterly winds change strong southwest. Winds may gust to gale at times especially about the Auckland region.
Highs: 17-19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Rain with heavy falls for some, easing during the afternoon then clearing in the evening. Northerlies change gusty southerly around midday.
Highs: 15-17

Eastern North Island

Cloudy with breezy northerlies, the odd spot of rain possible. Rain becoming more persistent around midday as a gusty south to southwest change moves in (gales likely about the coast). Rain clears in the evening. Gisborne and perhaps parts of northern Hawkes Bay will see the gusty southwest change kick in but it may be fairly dry with only a few showers on the cards.

Wellington

Rain with heavy falls possible, clearing around midday. Northerlies change gusty southerly early morning.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Rain, possibly heavy then clearing by midday with cloud breaking away to clear skies by evening. Cold southerly winds die out in the evening then freshening again overnight for a time.
Highs: 15-16

Canterbury

Rain, easing then clearing by midday then areas of sun breaking through. Southwest winds strengthen later in the evening with further rain for a time and a few snow flurries to 500m before clearing overnight.
High: 12

West Coast

Morning rain clears then sunny spells develop, a few further showers move through later in the evening. Breezy cool southwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-15

Southland & Otago

Any early showers clear then expect sunny spells, mid to late afternoon a gusty southwest change brings rain which eases in the evening. Some snow may fall to 400m for a time.
Highs: 11-14
