A low pressure system sits out to the east of New Zealand today, the North Island has westerlies and unstable conditions. A strong southerly airflow for the South Island spreads into the North Island this afternoon and evening.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Showers, some may be heavy with thunderstorms before easing later in the evening. Gusty westerlies tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Showers, some may be heavy with thunderstorms then easing evening. Westerlies tend southwest later in the day.
Highs: 14-16

Eastern North Island

A few early spots of rain clear then expect sunny spells with northwesterly breezes. Chance of a shower in the afternoon otherwise dry, a greater risk of showers in the evening as westerlies change southwest.
Highs: 19-20

Wellington

Areas of rain, heavy for a time late afternoon as southerlies rise to gale. Rain then eases later in the evening.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Dry at first then showers push through in the afternoon as southwesterly winds become strong / gusty. Showers clear in the evening with cloud breaking.
Highs: 15-18

Canterbury

Rain, possibly heavy then easing to showers late afternoon. Strong southwesterly winds gusting to gale about the coast.
High: 12

West Coast

Morning showers clear then sunny areas increase from afternoon, breezy Southerly winds.
High: 17

Southland & Otago

Rain, possibly heavy in the morning then easing during the day and clearing in the evening. Breezy cold southerly winds, strong about the Otago coastline.
Highs: 11-12
