An unstable strong westerly airflow lies over New Zealand today. Most regions can expect rain or showers at times point today, thunderstorms and hail possible also.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Morning rain with a few heavy falls then expect showers, some may be heavy with possible thunderstorms and hail. Breezy west to northwesterly winds becoming strong in the evening with a risk of gales out west.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Showers, some may be heavy at times with thunderstorms and hail especially afternoon onwards. Brisk to strong northwesterly winds, winds may gust to gale from evening.
Highs: 14-16

Eastern North Island

Areas of high cloud, a few spots of rain may spread from the west at times. Gusty northwesterly winds becoming strong from the west overnight.
Highs: 19-20

Wellington

Showers, some may be heavy with thunderstorms. Gusty northwesterly winds.
High: 15

Marlborough & Nelson

Any early rain clears then mostly sunny with gusty northwesterly winds, a few overnight showers with a fresh southwest change.
Highs: 15-18

Canterbury

Morning sun and increasing high cloud with northerly winds. An afternoon southwest change brings showers which may be heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing in the evening.
Highs: 17-18

West Coast

Rain eases to showers late morning, perhaps drying out for a time in the afternoon with some sun possible. Later in the evening rain moves in again as northwest winds change southwest.
Highs: 13-14

Southland & Otago

Rain, easing to showers in the morning about Southland but not elsewhere till evening. Rain or showers clear for most overnight. Cold southwesterly winds.
Highs: 12-14
