A northwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today while a large anticyclone sits just to the north of the North Island.

North Island
Mostly sunny for the upper North Island with westerly winds, an afternoon sea breeze may develop in the east especially about eastern Northland. Some morning cloud for the Bay Of Plenty with the risk of a shower then becoming mostly sunny this afternoon. Cloudy areas for the lower western North Island (Taranaki through to Kapiti), risk of a shower at times mainly for Kapiti. Winds from the northwest.

Mostly sunny along the east coast, there may be some high cloud at times. Winds from the northwest however an easterly sea breeze may develop this afternoon about coastal Hawkes Bay / Gisborne.

Afternoon temperatures in the low to mid twenties for many, perhaps getting into the high twenties for parts of Hawkes Bay / Gisborne and inland Northland.

South Island
Mostly cloudy for the West Coast, showers at times especially for South Westland, North Westland may see more frequent areas of dry. Nelson / Marlborough are mostly sunny and hot with some high cloud, winds from the north or northwest. Canterbury sees sunny areas and some high cloud, winds from the northwest. During this evening a southerly breeze gradually pushes northwards through the region with the chance of some cloud, cloud most likely about South Canterbury early evening bringing the risk of a shower.

Otago sees some high cloud, cloud thickens this afternoon with a few spots of rain possible late afternoon / evening, mainly about North Otago. Winds mostly from the northwest but tending southeast this afternoon near the coast then easterly in the evening. Some cloud for Southland with westerly winds.

High’s in the mid twenties right from Southland all the way up to Nelson in the east, perhaps getting into the late twenties or even early thirties for some spots. The West Coast sees temperatures reaching into the high teens.
