Upper North Island

Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, dry spells at times too more so about Northland. Strong northerlies change gusty westerly this morning. Rain about Bay Of Plenty may be heavy this morning, easing to showers by midday.

Lower North Island

Areas of rain or showers in the west, strong to gale north to northwesterly winds change strong to gale westerly later this afternoon. For the east coast expect some rain this morning then clearing to a mostly sunny afternoon as strong to gale northeasterly winds change brisk / strong northwest.

Upper South Island

Areas of rain with heavy falls for some, especially around Nelson / Marlborough then easing to showers this afternoon as strong northeasterlies (gale about some northern parts of the South Island) change southwest. Southwesterlies strengthen along the east coast from afternoon rising to gale for many along the coast, severe gales possible for some especially about Banks Peninsula.

Lower South Island

Rain in the east with heavy falls, gusty southeasterlies change to the southwest this afternoon then strengthen rising to gale about the coast possibly severe gale about Otago Peninsula. Rain eases overnight. Any rain about South Westland clearing this morning then sunny areas developing this afternoon, winds gusty from the southeast tending to the southwest this afternoon.
