Upper North Island

Cloud increases this morning, showers develop around midday then easing in the evening as brisk northwesterly winds change westerly.

Lower North Island

Mostly cloudy with showers turning to rain this morning, easing back to showers again in the evening. Strong west to northwesterly winds gusting to gale at times especially through Cook Strait. The east coast sees sunny areas and increasing high cloud, a few spots of rain spreading into the Wairarapa this morning then further north in the afternoon. Rain clears in the evening. Winds brisk to strong from the WNW.

Upper South Island

Rain along the West Coast with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, easing this evening. Rain spreading into Nelson and western parts of Marlborough also then easing this afternoon and clearing evening. Canterbury sees mostly sunny weather, the odd shower spreads into the foothills at times from the west. A southwest change also develops late afternoon along the coast up to Banks Peninsula which brings a few showers one or two of which may be heavy. Otherwise most can expect strong northwesterly winds today.

Lower South Island

Rain for South Westland / Fiordland with heavy falls, possible thunderstorms too then easing from afternoon. Showers about Southland with the odd heavy fall / risk of hail spreading into most of Otago this morning although Otago Peninsula northwards along the coast may remain dry with sunny spells. Showers ease overnight. Winds quite gusty from the west, rising to gale this afternoon about coastal Southland and coastal Otago.
