Upper North Island

Areas of cloud and the odd shower, mainly out west. Showers becoming more intense in the afternoon with a risk of hail and perhaps a thunderstorm or two. Winds gusty from the southwest.

Lower North Island

Strong west to southwest winds with showers, heavy at times with a risk of hail and thunder. The east coast is mainly dry with westerlies then in the afternoon winds tend more southwest with the risk of a few showers. Snow above about 800m for the Central Plateau.

Upper South Island

Heavy showers with a risk of hail and thunder on the West Coast becoming more restricted to Buller from afternoon then easing there in the evening. The east coast has areas of cloud, the odd shower also. Southwesterlies freshen from afternoon with the chance of showers increasing, a few snow flurries above 700m. Nelson and Marlborough mainly dry with sunny areas and west to southwest winds.

Lower South Island

Heavy showers and possible hail about Southland and Otago, easing in the evening. Snow to 700m, perhaps 600m at a push. Winds gusty and cold from the southwest. Morning heavy showers for South Westland gradually easing and mostly clearing by afternoon.
