Upper North Island

Cloudy areas with breezy westerly winds, chance of a shower at times mainly about the Waikato.

Lower North Island

Fairly cloudy with areas of rain or showers in the west and about Wellington, winds strong from the west / northwest up to gale force through Cook Strait. Thick high cloud out east with showers spreading into the Wairarapa at times from the west then clearing in the afternoon, winds gusty from the WNW.

Upper South Island

Rain in the west with heavy falls then easing in the afternoon as strong northwesterlies tend west to southwest. Showers about Nelson clear in the afternoon with some sun breaking through. Thick high cloud in the morning for Marlborough and Canterbury with some brief rain possible then sunny areas break through after midday, winds strong and gusty from the northwest, perhaps tending a little more westerly after midday.

Lower South Island

Early rain on the West Coast eases to showers, gusty west to southwest winds. Rain or showers for much of Southland and Otago during the day although clearing coastal Otago by midday and some sun moving in, winds strong from the west or southwest.
