A reasonably deep low moves over the North Island today bringing rain to the upper half of the island, heavy for some regions. The rest of the country is fairly settled although a very cold southwest change moves onto the lower South Island overnight or early on Sunday morning.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Rain with heavy falls, easing about Northland in the afternoon and elsewhere in the evening. Easterly quarter winds change south to southwest by evening becoming strong about western coastlines.
Highs: 13-18
Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy, occasional showers develop by midday New Plymouth northwards as winds change southerly. Showers clear later in the evening. For the Central North Island north of Lake Taupo rain may be heavy for a time late afternoon before clearing later on. Mainly dry elsewhere with plenty of high cloud.

Eastern North Island
Mainly cloudy skies, rain developing Hawkes bay northwards in the morning becoming heavy late afternoon especially for Gisborne. Rain with heavy falls eases overnight. Light winds in the morning then southerlies pick up after midday.

Wellington
Areas of high cloud with northwesterly winds tending southerly around midday.
High: 13
Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny areas and some high cloud, light winds tend east to northeast in the afternoon.
Highs: 14-15
Canterbury
Mostly sunny with light winds, late afternoon winds tend southerly with some cloud.
High: 14
West Coast
Sunny areas and some cloud with southwesterly winds, occasional showers for Fiordland during the day.
High: 12
Southland & Otago
Occasional showers about Southland then a few moving into Otago during the afternoon, showers clearing in the evening. Gusty west to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 9-10

Hi Guys. Light rain all night here just south of Waipu. Just read 23mm in the gauge and counting. Been waiting awhile for this so safely say no “winter drought” this year? Pond finally full and water tanks overflowing so all good. Reasonably warm as well so will still be some grass growth for the farmers. Heres to a wet weekend and sunshine after.
