A resonably sized low pressure system moves over the South Island today from west to east, associated with it is a frontal system which pushes over the country during the day. Cold south to southwesterly winds gradually push onto the lower South Island later this afternoon / evening bringing cooler temperatures.

Auckland & Northland
Periods of cloud with northwesterlies slowly building this morning and afternoon, a couple of showers move through late afternoon with a brisk westerly change.
Highs: 25-27

Waikato, Central North Island & Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy with northwesterlies building, a few showers about Bay Of Plenty
especially in the east gradually clearing around midday. Showers then rain
gradually moves in this afternoon. Heavy for a time late afternoon / evening
with possible thunderstorms. Easing back to showers later on.
Highs: 21-26

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud with northwesterlies building, spells of rain move
over the Wairarapa this afternoon then further north this evening.
Highs: 27-29

Western North Island

Cloud thickening this morning with northwesterlies building, showers
develop this afternoon becoming heavy for a time with possible thunderstorms.
Gusty strong west to northwest winds this afternoon.
Highs: 22-24

Wellington

Mostly cloudy with gusty north to northwesterly winds, strong towards
midday. Rain moves in this afternoon heavy for a time, northwesterlies rise to
gale occasionally then easing later this evening.
High: 21

Nelson

Cloudy, rain develops later this morning becoming heavy with
northeasterlies strengthening. Rain then eases this afternoon to showers as
winds tend more northwest, showers clear by evening.
Highs: 20-21

Marlborough

High cloud thickens this morning, northwesterly winds strengthen rising to
gale towards midday. Rain moves in around midday with heavy falls possible then
easing this evening and clearing.
High: 21

Canterbury

Thickening high cloud this morning, a few spots of rain move in from the
west then clear early afternoon. Sunny areas develop with breezy NE winds
tending NW, later this afternoon a southwest change moves into South Canterbury
bringing showers possibly heavy, showers move further north during the
evening.

West Coast

Rain this morning with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms, gusty
northeasterlies. Rain easing to showers by midday, one or two could still be
heavy with a rumble of thunder or two. Winds change southwest this evening with
showers clearing.

Coastal Otago

Areas of rain move in this morning with breezy easterlies, winds change
southwest by evening.
High: 16

Central Otago

Showers and occasional dry spells, easterlies tend southwest this
afternoon. Showers clear overnight.
Highs: 16-17

Southland

Periods of rain with southeasterly winds, tending southerly this evening.
Rain eases later this evening to just the odd shower.
Highs: 14-15
