A low pressure system moves easterwards towards New Zealand today in the Tasman Sea, rain moves onto the upper South Island then later in the day for the west of the North Island.

Northland
Mostly cloudy with northerly winds, freshening from afternoon. Chance of a light shower at times then some patchy rain develops late afternoon.
Highs: 17-19

Auckland

Mostly cloudy with increasing northerly winds, chance of a light shower or
two from mid afternoon then expect patchy evening rain.
High: 17

Bay Of Plenty

Increasing cloud with northerly winds, late rain

Waikato & Central North Island

Mostly cloudy with light northerlies, chance of a light shower about
otherwise mainly dry. Later in the evening rain moves in.
High: 16

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and some increasing high cloud, light winds. Rain develops
about the Wairarapa later in the evening then further north overnight as
southerlies freshen.
Highs: 19-20

Taranaki

Mostly cloudy skies with northerlies, freshening from afternoon. Chance of
a drizzle patch then rain develops in the evening.
High: 15

Western North Island

Plenty of high cloud with northwesterlies, overnight rain with winds
changing southeast.
High: 17

Wellington

Cloudy with brisk northwesterlies, the odd spit then late evening rain with
a strong southerly change.
High: 15

Nelson
Cloudy with light rain
or drizzle developing in the morning, northerly winds. Rain becoming more
persistent in the evening then heavy falls possible later, winds change
southeast around midnight with rain then easing.

Marlborough

Cloudy with breezy northwesterlies easing in the afternoon, odd spot of
rain gradually moves in. More persistent rain develops in the evening as
southeasterlies freshen.

Canterbury

Cloudy with the odd shower moving in during the afternoon, some rain from
late afternoon mainly Banks Peninsula northwards, just light showers or drizzle
patches further south. Light winds freshen from the south towards midday.
Highs: 14-16

West Coast

Rain Hokitika northwards with heavy falls possible, rain clears overnight
as southeasterlies freshen. Further south expect high cloud, light winds freshen
from the southeast later in the day.
High: 14

Coastal Otago

Southwesterlies freshen in the morning, gusty at times about the coast. The
odd shower about then clearing in the evening.
High: 12

Central Otago

Chance of a late morning shower otherwise dry, cloud spells break as the
afternoon wears on. Light southwesterlies.
Highs: 11-12

Southland

Cloudy with fresh southwesterlies, the odd brief shower at times then
clearing in the evening with winds easing.
High: 9
