More than three quarters of the North Island are seeing showers or bursts of rain this morning whereas the south sees a smattering here and there but only to about 15% of the island.
Overnight showers were heavy in places however perhaps not to the degree that was expected in some areas.
It’s been a soggy week on the whole due to a low hanging about but hopefully today will be the last in a string of days for a few regions as a high pushes into the south tonight and during Friday.
It’s been quite a few nights since we last saw frosts but tomorrow night could see some decent ones forming over southern and central districts and even tonight inland South Island areas could be in for a chilly one.
This weekend sees an incoming low crossing the North Island with a band of showers or rain for many areas but the south remains dry initially until a nor’ wester builds delivering rain to the west and south of the South Island.
Next week looks icy in the early stages with the risk of snow to low levels from Christchurch to Invercargill and inland Mainland regions however It all depends on the wind direction and if it’s more west than sou’ west eastern areas could remain largely dry due to the sheltering effect of the alps.
“At the moment there’s a chance but the wind appears to favour the far south and the West Coast at this point” says weather analyst Richard Green ” however if the wind swings slightly more to the south it could be a different story. We’re keeping a close on on it”.
Further ahead to Queens Birthday weekend and a high begins the long weekend which should see clear skies and frosty nights for many of us.
Later in the weekend a low swoops in bringing nor’ west rain late on Sunday and much of Monday to the west and south of the South Island.
