More windy weather is in the forecast this weekend along with some wet weather, with rain/showers most likely in the west – and driest weather in the very north and eastern side of NZ.
The polar boundary comes back into the lower South Island for a time following some warmer weather.
But the big picture shows no significant changes to our October weather pattern – but intensity of the wind and rain events may be relaxing a little bit for some areas compared to previous weeks.

Hi Alice, still too early to lock in summer with any accuracy. At the moment we’re seeing a spring that is bringing more wind – so it makes sense those westerlies have dried out the eastern NI (especially parts of Hawkes Bay which have had below rainfall all year in some spots). There is a chance the westerly flow this year may drag on longer and therefore bring drier/hotter conditions to the east. We expect the east to dry out further in the coming weeks – and we’ll be looking for any change in the coming weeks that may help reverse things. For now, those westerlies are dominating the entire country and likely will do so into November.
Cheers
Philip Duncan
