With thunderstorms across the country for much of this week, we thought we’d get a guage on what our readers thought of the oft-misunderstood weather system while they’re fresh in everyone’s minds…
Thunderstorms are caused when warm, moist air rises and condenses into cumulonimbus clouds, then water which has reached its dew point collides with other sources of moisture and creates a downdraft, commonly associated with fog or other precursors to thunder and lightning.
But what do you think? Do you fear them, or enjoy them?
Let us know by voting in our poll, and look out for our results summary next week!

Personal experience, I hate them, and as a child, still have very vivid memories of my uncle in the Bombay’s on a farm in Auckland where lightening struck a tree and killed him… I was 11 years old. And saw this First hand, he had a pitch fork in his hand. It amazing how people today continue to put themselves in danager despite NZ Met service giving out warnings of pending thunderstorms, yet how many actually READ those words of warning. Go on skip this post if you will, one day you may regret not having heeding those warnings of how to keep safe in an actual thunderstorm outside or in a car. This incident below detail the USA what can happen
All thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning. While lightning fatalities have decreased over the past 30 years, lightning continues to be one of the top three storm-related killers in the United States. In 2010 there were 29 fatalities and 182 injuries from lightning. Although most lightning victims survive, people struck by lightning often report a variety of long-term, debilitating symptoms. http://www.ready.gov/thunderstorms-lightning

They don’t seem to happen around here anywhere near as often as they used to.
Certainly not as powerful as we used to get them years ago – NW of Pirongia village, NE facing side of the mountain
I would hate to complain about the hot, dry, late summer but, to be frank, it was just dead boring after a while!

I had to vote somewhere inbetween, as I dislike meso or rotating storms, they give me the creeps.

I would love more thunderstorms here in Stratford Taranaki, the Spring storms were kind of boring this year.

Thunderstorms are an awesome force but so scary. Even more scary are electrical storms that continue for hours on end. I do not like the death and destruction that sometimes happens.
