Monday’s national forecast – NW then front

A front gradually pushes northwards over the South Island today, northwesterlies ahead of the front, changing southwest in behind.

North Island

Partly cloudy skies in the west, Taranaki and Kapiti have a few showers but these clear this afternoon with cloud breaking up, while mid level cloud breaks up in the afternoon some high cloud then moves in. Sunny and hot in the east. Northwesterlies for most, strong through Cook Strait. Afternoon northeasterly winds possible for coastal Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.

South Island

Cloudy for the West Coast with showers, heavy rain for Fiordland reaches into North Westland this evening while simultaneously easing further south as a front moves northwards. Northwesterlies change southwest as rain eases. Nelson and Marlborough are mostly sunny with high cloud, spits of rain overnight especially for Nelson. Mostly sunny in the east with some high cloud and warm temperatures, northwesterly winds. Southland sees some rain develop this morning as winds change to the southwest, a few showers may reach into Otago this afternoon, later this evening or overnight any remaining precipitation clears. Later this evening or overnight a southwest change moves into Canterbury bringing some cloud.
