Monday’s national forecast – Northerly airflow

A northerly airflow lies over the country today with a low crossing the South Island overnight bringing heavy rain in the west.

North Island

Partly cloudy skies in the west, a shower or two possible mainly for Kapiti / Palmerston North and for Northland / Auckland / Waikato, north to northwesterly winds. Mostly sunny along the east coast with some high cloud, winds from the northwest but tending northeast in the afternoon for coastal Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Overnight spits or showers for Wellington.

South Island

Mostly sunny with some high cloud for Nelson down through to Canterbury, north to northwesterly winds. Northwesterlies become strong about Marlborough and especially through Cook Strait in the afternoon, easing evening. Cloudy along the West Coast, rain south of Westport with heavy falls, the odd shower further north turns to rain at night then becoming heavy. Rain develops about Nelson in the evening before spreading into Marlborough, rain heavy overnight for Tasman and perhaps Nelson. Spits or showers for coastal Southland, becoming more widespread into Otago during the afternoon where one or two showers may become heavy. Overnight rain moves into Canterbury as northerlies swing around to the south or southeast, rain becomes heavy inland.
