A northerly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a large anticyclone off to the east in the Pacific Ocean.

North Island

A northeasterly airflow lies over the upper North Island, expect cloudy areas with a chance of low cloud or fog first thing, there may be some sun also especially for Northland and Auckland. Expect a shower or two about. A mix of sun and cloud along the east coast (Gisborne to Wairarapa), light winds tend northeast in the afternoon. Cloudy areas and the risk of a shower at times for the lower western North Island, winds from the northwest.

South Island

Cloudy for the West Coast with showers, rain south of about Greymouth with heavy falls. Some rain spreading into Southland and Otago also then dry spells increasing from afternoon. Canterbury is mainly dry, there may be a spot of rain more so about South Canterbury, perhaps further north in the evening. Marlborough and Nelson are dry with increasing high cloud. Winds are from the northerly quarter.

Temperatures

Temperatures for the North Island are mostly in the low twenties but perhaps getting into the mid twenties about parts of the east coast and perhaps Waikato. The Bay Of Plenty, especially inland may struggle to get out of the high teens due to cloud cover. Warm for the east of the South Island, highs in the mid to late twenties, high teens or early twenties in the west.
