A front passes over the North Island tonight while clearing the top of the South Island this evening, rain moves in with the front especially out west. Only brief falls make it into eastern regions. Meanwhile overnight very cold southwesterlies develop about Southland bringing showers and snow to 400m by dawn tomorrow.
