Low pressure is deepening north-east of NZ today as high pressure tracks south of the South Island. This set-up makes for strong South-easterlies over the North Island and a windy nor-easter into parts of the South Island.
Let’s get into the forecast for Tuesday to start with…
RAIN:
Rain and showers brush the eastern North Island thanks to that offshore low, mostly from East Cape to Wairarapa. Dry or mainly dry elsewhere.
WIND:
South to south-east winds may rise to gale force around the eastern North Island, mainly from Hawke’s Bay westwards into Central Plateau and maybe Manawatu.
TEMPERATURES:
Colder air moves into the lower North Island and many places will notice the heat and humidity easing.
WEEK AHEAD
On Wednesday it’s a repeat of Tuesday for the North Island with windy South-easterlies due to that offshore storm to the north-east of the country and some wet eastern weather, again mostly around Hawke’s Bay to East Cape – dry elsewhere in the North Island. The South Island looks dry with nor-easters continuing for places like Canterbury and coastal Otago.
On Thursday there isn’t a great deal of change for the North Island with eastern rain or showers from East Cape to Wairarapa and those windy southerly quarter winds. The South Island has east to north-east winds – again mainly along that eastern side – and that might see a few eastern showers into places like Canterbury.
By Friday a new area of low pressure lies over NZ. Despite this new large low forming late week and over the weekend – it doesn’t appear too severe. But the weekend will have unsettled weather moving in from the west with more rain, showers and some wind.
