Between a high centred to the northeast of New Zealand and a low in the Tasman Sea lies a front streaming onto the northwestern corner of the South Island. Tropical Cyclone Donna starts to descend southwards in the tropics.
Mostly cloudy for the upper North Island with the chance of a shower from afternoon, the odd sunny spell possible too. Northeasterly winds, freshening from afternoon about Northland and Auckland.
Sunny areas and some high cloud for the lower North Island in the west, cloud may be a little thicker about Kapiti and Taranaki bringing the chance of a few showers during the day. Rain moves in to northern Taranaki overnight with the chance of heavy falls. North to northeasterly winds.
Sunny areas and some high cloud along the east coast, light north to northeasterly winds. Wellington sees mostly cloudy skies with the odd shower, mainly morning. Northerly winds.
Cloudy with areas of rain or drizzle about Nelson and Marlborough, mainly morning then dry spells increasing. Overnight rain moves in again to Nelson and then Marlborough in the west. Light winds generally from the north.
Sunny spells and increasing cloud for Canterbury, a few spots of rain possible from evening or perhaps more likely overnight. Light winds.
Mostly cloudy along the West Coast with showers or some rain about North Westland, rain heavy at times about Buller from afternoon. Drier conditions further south into South Westland although some rain moving in later in the evening or overnight. East to northeasterly winds.
A mainly sunny day about Southland and Otago, some evening high cloud. Light east to northeasterly winds.
Blue – Heavy form of precipitation.
Purple – Strong winds.
Yellow – Temperatures around the mid 20 degree mark or over.
