A front moves over the North Island on Thursday while another pushes over the South Island bringing potentially unstable weather.

For the upper North Island, morning sunny spells possible then showers move in during the afternoon before clearing in the evening. West to northwest winds change southwest overnight.

Cloudy areas about the lower North Island in the west, west to northwesterly winds and the chance of a shower. The east coast has plenty of high cloud, a few spells of spots of rain spread from the west in the afternoon then clearing in the evening.

The West Coast of the South Island sees morning rain mostly clearing around midday although there may be a shower or two continue till evening, sunny spells increase after midday. Dry at first for the upper South Island then showers move in during the afternoon, some may become heavy with thunderstorms and hail.

The lower South Island may see morning sun then showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail move in for the afternoon. Parts of North Otago through to Mid Canterbury may see rain or showers from morning.
