Easter is upon us and Mother Nature has a different flavoured easter egg of weather for every region. Boy, that’s a lame opener for a news story. Got your attention though… so here it is: Your Easter Weekend Forecast…
So what’s happening?
One big fat high over the country, a big deep low in the Southern Ocean, and two fronts – both losing their puff as they head northwards.
Your region by region forecast:
Northland/Bay of Islands: No surprises here, it’s going to be a sunny, very warm, and mostly dry long weekend. Some easterlies may drag in some clouds on Monday. Ohhh scary.
Auckland/Coromandel Peninsula/Bay of Plenty/Gisborne: High humidity and afternoon cloud build ups may produce a late heat shower on Friday, otherwise Easter starts off great. By Sunday and Monday it could be a bit cloudy with the chance of some afternoon heat showers…nothing to worry about really.
Taranaki/Wanganui/Manawatu/Hawkes Bay/Wairarapa: The hot weather continues, especially in the east – highs near 30 inland for Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay on Friday and Saturday. Sunday and Monday could be cloudy for all regions, with a shower or two possible in the west…nothing to help the farmers though, sorry.
Wellington: Warm northerly Friday. Cool southerly Saturday with a shower or two. Easterly with cloud on Sunday. Showers possible with a northerly on Monday. Make up your mind already.
Nelson/Marlborough: Pretty much sunny – very hot on Friday, then a cooler southerly on Saturday may cloud up the skies a bit for the rest of the weekend. Overall – 8.5/10 for camping weather…not bad for late March!
Canterbury: Mixed bag here (that’s annoying saying…’mixed bag’) Warm nor’westers by Friday evening…great for a white wine on the deck. The next 3 days then look partly cloudy with some wet stuff on Saturday. Slightly cooler easterlies then kicking in – temps around the late teens maybe 20…certainly cooler than this week has been – sorry!
Otago/Southland: Did someone say Winter? …the pending southerly change should nudge your highs down to the lower teens. Inland the days will be warmer but overnight lows may drop to only 5 or 6 degrees. A big shock from the recent 30+ day time highs! Southland will be wettest, Dunedin driest.
Greymouth/West Coast: Hmmm. I wonder….lets go for cloudy and wet.
Summary:
Yes a bit of a messy forecast for all of New Zealand. On the positive note, dry weather far out weighs wet weather. The South Island’s in for a bit of a southerly chiller and the North Island could get a bit cloudy with that afternoon heating. Best weather will be in the North Island’s northeast regions.
TRAVEL FORECAST
BY LAND: It’s a great weekend to be travelling…no excuses for any bad driving. Mainly dry roads, but be aware on Sunday/Monday of isolated showers right over NZ. If you’re suffering from road rage, call Newstalk ZB and vent…don’t take it out on your car!
BY AIR: Should be smooth flying all over the country…turbulence should be at a minimum.
BY SEA: Might be a bit windy but the swells will be insignifcant. Barf factor: Relatively low.
Best place to be?:
In the garden on Sunday with your kids looking for Easter Eggs…kids don’t care what the weather’s like Mum and Dad!!
