High pressure approaches with frosts, drier skies and lighter winds (+4 Maps)

High pressure is moving into NZ and will cross the country over Wednesday and Thursday. Before it arrives there is still a cooler southerly flow, most noticeable in the lower and eastern South Island, and the lower and eastern North Island up to about Hawke’s Bay.

Let’s get into the forecast for Tuesday to begin with…

RAIN:
Showers are most likely in the east today from coastal Southland to Canterbury, Wairarapa to East Cape. Rainfall won’t be huge but the northern half of Canterbury perhaps has the best chances. Elsewhere it is dry or mainly dry.

WIND:
There is a southerly flow generally into NZ for Tuesday with windier sou-westers for the top of the North Island and a bit more of an easterly flow for some parts of the South Island.

TEMPERATURES:
It’s cooler today in the south and eastern side of the country today – those most exposed to that southerly flow. Elsewhere it’s normal if not above normal. It will be cold tonight with frosts forming around the South Island’s interior.

WEEK AHEAD
By Wednesday high pressure expands over the South Island bringing that frosty weather through inland areas. This southerly flow feeds a few remaining showers around northern Hawke’s Bay, Mahia Peninsula and Gisborne, otherwise NZ is dry or mainly dry with lighter winds. A shower is possible in Northland later, otherwise dry.

On Thursday the high shifts a little east of the North Island with light winds and dry skies for most. Perhaps an isolated shower in Northland.

Friday is similar although now the shower risk is in the north-western corner of the South Island.

This weekend high pressure parked over the Chatham Islands keeps an easterly flow over the North Island, but west to NW winds develop over the South Island. A storm between East Cape and Tonga is worth monitoring too – although for now modelling keeps it away from NZ, but it’s close enough to keep an eye on.
