Northwesterlies develop over the South Island on Friday while a ridge lies over the North Island, a front moves onto the lower South Island later in the evening coming in from the southwest.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly sunny with light easterly winds. Winds tend northeast in the afternoon about the Bay Of Plenty. Northland and Great Barrier Island see southeasterly breezes with cloudy periods, perhaps a shower or two for eastern areas otherwise mainly dry.
Highs: 21-24

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Sunny with light winds tending westerly in the afternoon.
Highs: 21-23

Eastern North Island

Sunny after any morning cloud breaks away, northeasterly winds. Areas of cloud may hang around Gisborne for much of the day.
Highs: 22-23

Wellington

Sunny spells with northerly winds becoming breezy from afternoon.
High: 20

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny with north to northwesterly winds picking up in the afternoon.
Highs: 21-27

Canterbury

Sunny with light winds tending northwest inland, overnight (perhaps more towards dawn on Saturday) a fresh southwest change moves in bringing a shower or two, maybe some drizzle.
High: 28

West Coast

Mostly sunny with west to northwesterly winds, cloud and drizzle moves into Fiordland during the afternoon then turning to rain in the evening. Cloud spreads northwards along the coast in the evening.
Highs: 19-24

Southland & Otago

Mostly sunny with some high cloud developing this afternoon, northwesterlies freshen mainly inland. A late evening southwest change brings showers which clear overnight.
Highs: 21-26
