A strong unstable westerly airflow eases over the North Island later today, the South Island sees improving weather for most as the day goes on however an afternoon shower or two possible for the Nelson / Marlborough region.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Showers, some may be heavy with a risk of thunderstorms and hail then clearing this evening. Brisk to strong westerly winds, gales possible Auckland northwards then easing later in the day.
Highs: 16-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Rain (chance of thunderstorms and hail about Taranaki) then easing to showers early afternoon which clear later in the evening. Sunny spells may break through at times from afternoon. Southwesterly winds, gusty about Taranaki.
Highs: 13-15

Eastern North Island

A gusty southwest change moves through in the morning bringing showers, some of which may be heavy with small hail then clearing in the evening. Gisborne sees some morning sun with breezy northwesterlies, the southwest change hits there early afternoon with heavy showers, hail and possible thunderstorms then clearing later on.
Highs: 15-16

Wellington

Morning rain eases to showers then clearing around midday, sunny spells then develop. Slight risk of a shower again late afternoon / early evening. Gusty southerly winds die out later in the evening.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson

Early showers clear then mostly sunny, from mid afternoon isolated showers may develop however possibly heavy with some small hail then clearing in the evening. Coastal Marlborough may remain dry and fairly sunny through the afternoon. Southwesterly winds die out in the evening.
Highs: 16-17

Canterbury

Morning showers clear then becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon, brisk southwesterly winds ease dying out in the evening.
High: 13

West Coast

Mostly sunny with breezy southwesterly winds, about northern Buller from afternoon isolated showers develop one or two of which may be heavy then clearing in the evening.
Highs: 15-17

Southland & Otago

Mostly sunny, cloud thickens overnight with spots of rain. Coastal Otago sees morning cloud and any showers clear then a mostly sunny afternoon. Westerlies for most, southwest winds about coastal Otago gradually ease.
Highs: 13-16
