A front quickly moves over the South Island this morning then onto the North Island this afternoon. Rain in the west with this front may be heavy with a risk of thunderstorms. Eastern areas can expect strong to gale northwest winds ahead of the front.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
The odd shower and sunny spells, then showers becoming heavier in the afternoon with the chance of thunderstorms and some hail. Strong westerlies change southwest in the evening, then showers ease overnight.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Occasional showers, heavy for a time in the afternoon with possible thunderstorms and hail then clearing in the evening as strong northwesterly winds change west to southwest. A chance of gales.

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny with some increasing high cloud, northwesterly winds freshen. Late afternoon or evening a southwest change moves through bringing the chance of a brief shower then clearing away.
Gale northwesterly winds in the morning with some rain moving in, then clearing afternoon with a westerly change.

Marlborough & Nelson
Strong to gale northwesterly winds then the chance of a shower late morning (some rain for Nelson) as winds change westerly. Sunny areas increase in the afternoon.
Morning showers as gale northwesterly winds change southwest, then a dry afternoon with sunny spells increasing and winds dying out.
Morning rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms / hail then easing to showers. Gusty west to southwesterly winds.

Southland & Otago
Showers, some may be heavy at times with hail mainly early morning then again afternoon / evening. Some snow to 500m. Strong west to southwesterly winds gusting to gale at times about Southland and coastal Otago.
