A strong southeasterly airflow lies over the North Island today, with rain or showers for many, with heavy falls on the east coast for much of the day. The South Island is cloudy in the west with patchy showers or drizzle, dry in the east.
Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Early heavy rain eases to the odd shower for the rest of the day, perhaps a few sunny areas. Easterly winds strengthen from the southeast during afternoon / evening. Northland may remain fairly dry for much of the day with light winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Rain in the morning, possibly heavy, then easing. Southeasterly winds strengthen with winds gusting to gale about the coastline from afternoon onwards.

Eastern North Island
Rain with heavy falls, breezy easterly winds becoming strong from the southeast during the afternoon. A risk of winds gusting to gale at times on the coast.
Patchy rain or drizzle, mostly in the morning then drying out in the afternoon. Southeasterly winds becoming strong by midday with a risk of gales.

Marlborough & Nelson
Patchy showers or drizzle, clearing in the evening, with strong southeasterly winds gusting to gale especially on the Marlborough coast and about northern Tasman. Severe southeast gales possible about Farewell Spit.
Cloudy with patchy showers or drizzle, especially inland. A few light snow flurries to 700m this morning lowering to 500m by evening. Cool south to southeasterly winds.
Plenty of high cloud, with winds fairly gusty from the east or southeast.

Southland & Otago
Morning cloud with the chance of some drizzle. Sunny spells in the afternoon as light southeasterly winds tend northeast in the afternoon.
